SPORTSMANSHIP: A CODE OF HONOR

Sportsmanship goes beyond rules and regulations—it's about respect, integrity, and setting a positive example on and off the field.

For Parents:  How to Support Positive Sportsmanship

  • Encourage your child to follow the rules and play fair.

  • Show respect and appreciation for coaches, umpires, and volunteers.

  • Celebrate the effort, not just the outcome.

  • Applaud great plays—no matter which team makes them.

  • Lead by example with positive behavior.

  • Teach your child to handle both wins and losses graciously.

  • Take time to learn the game’s rules and how it’s played.

Avoid These Behaviors

  • Reprimanding your child or others for mistakes—they’re all part of learning.

  • Criticizing umpires, coaches, or other parents and spectators.

For Players: Ways to Embrace Sportsmanship

  • Follow the rules and respect the game.

  • Support and show appreciation for teammates, coaches, umpires, and volunteers.

  • Value effort and teamwork above all.

  • Be a role model on and off the field.

  • Show grace in both victory and defeat.

  • Understand the game’s rules and how to play fairly.

What to Avoid

  • Criticizing teammates when mistakes happen—support them instead.

  • Arguing with umpires or officials.

  • Questioning or criticizing the coach’s decisions.

The Heart of the Game
Sportsmanship is about more than the game—it's about building character, fostering respect, and creating a positive experience for everyone involved. By embracing these principles, players, parents, and coaches can help ensure that the love of the game continues to thrive.
